John Van Spyk, Westlake Class of 1991

John Van Spyk was a three-year varsity letterman and standout forward for Westlake Basketball from 1987–1991, scoring more than 900 career varsity points. A back-to-back Team MVP as a junior and senior, he earned First Team All-Marmonte League honors and was twice named All-Ventura County. As team captain his senior year, Van Spyk was known for his intensity, leadership, and consistency, averaging 16+ points per game in both his junior and senior seasons. He also excelled academically, earning Principal’s Honor Roll recognition for three years. After Westlake, he played one season at Mesa College in San Diego, helping win the Pacific Coast Division Championship, before transferring to UC San Diego. He went on to build a long and influential career in the sports industry, founding and leading sports divisions at multiple digital agencies and managing major digital platforms—at one point supporting more than 30% of NFL team websites—while working with leading sports brands and leagues including the NBA, NHL, ESPN, MLS, and U.S. Soccer. Van Spyk continues to give back through Special Olympics involvement and youth basketball development.
